Advocates successfully raised their voices to increase access to ABLEnow accounts starting in 2026.

Passage of the ABLE Age Adjustment Act expands ABLE eligibility to individuals whose disability occurred before age 46. Starting January 1, 2026, an estimated six million more Americans with disabilities will have the ability to save for the future with ABLEnow.

“People with disabilities deserve the ability to save for their daily needs and major milestones—just like anyone else,” said Mary Morris, CEO of Virginia529, the agency that administers ABLEnow. “Passage of the ABLE Age Adjustment Act is a victory for millions of Americans, including one million disabled veterans. When 2026 comes, we’ll be ready to help these individuals open ABLEnow accounts.”

Since launching in 2016, ABLEnow has helped more than 13,000 customers collectively save $170 million without jeopardizing their eligibility for certain services and supports.

Information updated as of January 5, 2023.
