I’ve had a physical disability since birth—Arthrogryposis. This affects my arms and legs, which means I need help with all tasks of daily living.

As a person well-acquainted with limits, it can be frustrating when the government adds another layer of limits. Programs like Medicaid allow me to live in the community and have caregivers at home. However, there are rules attached to such programs, telling me I cannot save money without losing the benefits that I need. These rules make it hard to be truly independent.

Over the summer, I learned more about ABLEnow. This new program finally moves things in a good direction… I can save money. I can access the account by myself. I can work on real goals.

It didn’t take me long to decide. I opened an account. Now I have a chance to save for my future. Now people with disabilities are given the opportunity to put money aside and work towards more independence.

With my savings, I plan to pursue two goals. First, I want to apply to graduate school and become a Life Coach. I have a passion to help others and this is something I can do. Second, I am constantly thinking: what could future independence look like? How do I get there? My new ABLEnow account will help me reach both goals.

This step forward financially offers a sense of freedom beyond my physical limits. And feeling less limited in one small area is something I will celebrate any day.
