Learn about the Organization Behind ABLEnow The organization behind ABLEnow has a new name, reflecting an expanded mission and new savings opportunities. Commonwealth Savers serves as the program administrator for ABLEnow. Formerly known as Virginia529, the organization was originally established in 1994 by the Virginia General Assembly to help citizens save for the rising costs of higher education. After decades of successful education savings program management, the Virginia General Assembly expanded the self-sustaining organization’s mission to include disability and retirement savings programs. To reflect this variety of tax-advantaged savings options, Virginia529 is now Commonwealth Savers. This new name captures the essence of the agency’s evolved mission – to empower even more individuals and families on their financial journey. ABLEnow accounts are nationally available to eligible U.S. citizens and legal residents, regardless of state residency.
